Providence St. Joseph Health provides accessible, high-quality, compassionate health care in an increasingly uncertain world—regardless of coverage or ability to pay. We help people and communities benefit from the best health care model for the future—today.

Institute for Systems Biology

On our journey to create healthier communities, we are turning to the science of genomics to help individuals map a personal path to wellness. It’s a unique approach to personalized medicine that we call scientific wellness.

The Institute for Systems Biology is a not-for-profit biomedical research organization that is part of the Providence St. Joseph Health family. The scientists and engineers at ISB are working to unlock the mystery of the genome to learn how we can keep people healthy well into their 90s.

This is a proactive approach to medicine that will help us shift from a disease focus to a wellness focus. With ISB, we are pursuing research in the areas of breast cancer survivorship, Alzheimer’s, glioblastoma and markers to help us identify and reverse disease at the earliest possible stages. Our partnership gives us the opportunity to bring these advances to people in the communities we serve.

Mental Health: Well Being Trust

When Providence Health & Services and St. Joseph Health came together, we made a commitment to address an urgent crisis in our communities: mental health. As part of our combination, we are funding the development of an independent institute by providing an initial seed endowment of $100 million.

The Well Being Trust is a new national foundation dedicated to advancing mental, social and spiritual well-being. Created to include participation from organizations across sectors and perspectives, the institute is committed to addressing the most critical mental health challenges facing America and transforming individual and community wellness. Guided by a national advisory council chaired by Maureen Bisognano and Chief Executive Tyler Norris, the institute will serve as a leader in such areas as innovation and integration, community investment, campaigns, research and policy.

The foundation will implement innovative solutions, investments and partnerships that help:

  • Eliminate the stigma of mental illness and ease access to care
  • Build resilience in children, teens and families and seniors
  • Reduce suffering from depression, anxiety and social isolation
  • Curtail substance abuse
  • Create hope for people with serious and persistent mental illness
  • Grow healthy equitable communities that support human flourishing

Institute for Human Caring

Providence St. Joseph Health isn’t just about meeting the medical needs of those we serve. We are focused on the whole person, including mind, body and spirit. With the leadership of the Institute for Human Caring, we are ensuring people get the best care possible by delivering care based on medical needs, as well as personal values.

The institute advances efforts to measure, monitor and improve person-centered care system-wide and supports culturally diverse communities through expanding models of caring. The institute also helps to ensure:

  • Every person we serve is treated as whole person
  • The care we deliver is consistent with the values, preferences and priorities of those we serve
  • Sovereignty over illness, dying, caregiving and grieving properly belongs to families and communities

The Institute for Human Caring believes that raising expectations for health care that treats each of us as a whole person – eliciting and honoring our values, preferences and priorities – will inspire a growing demand for professionals who can make whole person care the new normal.

Digital and Consumer Innovation:Providence Ventures

Providence St. Joseph Health is working to bring health care into the digital and consumer age with the goal of better serving patients and consumers, delivering care on their terms: where, when and how they want it.

To help us achieve that goal, our innovation and strategy division is made of up three teams:

  • The Digital Innovation Group actively builds software to support patients, consumers, clinicians and technology partners
  • The Consumer Innovation Group creates health related businesses in areas such as women’s health, senior services and chronic disease. This group partners closely with Providence caregivers and patients to create new services and tools designed to support a patient’s ongoing health between episodes of care.
  • Providence Ventures advances health care delivery by funding technology innovations and works side by side with our colleagues who are actively building a digital platform to make it easier to collaborate with early-stage companies

All three teams work together to identify, pilot and drive adoption of new technologies and business models.

University of ProvidenceProvidence High School

Education is part of the heritage of Providence St. Joseph Health. Our founders played a key role in building schools in the Western United States to ensure young people are well educated. We continue that tradition today with two educational ministries.

The University of Providence in Great Falls, Montana is a Catholic liberal arts school that serves about 1,000 students. In addition to a liberal arts curriculum, the university features a school of nursing and offers continuing education for health care professionals and caregivers across Providence St. Joseph Health. Our vision is to build upon the great work of the school to help train and build the health care workforce of the future.

Providence High School is a private, Catholic college preparatory school located in Burbank, Calif., on the campus of Providence St. Joseph Medical Center. It is also across the street from major TV and movie studios. It’s unique location in a health care and film production environment allows the school to offer three focus programs: Medical, Cinema Arts and Technology. About 44 percent of the 400-member student body receives financial aid as part of our commitment to ensure young people of all socio-economic backgrounds can have access to quality education.
